A Foundation of Faith

The Catholic community in the growing town of Blenheim initially worshipped in a simple, small church built in the 1860s. As the parish grew, the need for a larger and more worthy place of worship became evident. The driving force behind the new church was Father Augustine Sauzeau, a French Marist missionary who served the Marlborough parish for many years. Under his energetic leadership, the community embarked on the ambitious project to build a church that would serve as a permanent and inspiring centre for their faith.

A Masterpiece in Timber

To realise their vision, the parish commissioned one of New Zealand's most prominent 19th-century architects, Thomas Turnbull. Turnbull was renowned for his grand designs for public and commercial buildings, as well as churches. For St Mary's, he produced a stunning design in the Gothic Revival style, a popular architectural movement that drew inspiration from medieval European cathedrals. Built entirely of native timber, the church features the characteristic elements of the style: a steeply pitched roof, lancet windows with pointed arches, and a soaring bell tower and spire that remains a distinctive feature of the Blenheim skyline. The craftsmanship and scale of the timber construction make it one of the finest examples of a wooden parish church from the colonial era in New Zealand.
